Tower of Seven Winds in Stromboli
According to Greek mythology, Aeolus, the “God of the South Winds,” resided on Stromboli. This small volcanic island, located between Naples and Sicily, is Italy’s only continuously active volcano—it never sleeps. In fact, it erupts every 20 minutes, sending fire into the sky.
“Raging Island… Raging Passions!” was the tagline of the 1950 film Stromboli, directed on location by Roberto Rossellini. The film’s lead actress, Ingrid Bergman, became pregnant by Rossellini, causing a scandal that led to the film being widely condemned in the American market.
Armin T. Wegner was deeply fascinated by the island. After the liberation of Italy in 1943, he purchased a small mill there and transformed it into his summer residence, which he named the “Tower of Seven Winds.” Today, the house operates as a bed-and-breakfast, offering visitors a unique opportunity to stay in the former home of the renowned poet.
